Microsoft Teams is a vital collaboration solution for businesses of all sizes, facilitating seamless communication and teamwork. However, as Teams proliferate, it is not uncommon to come across ownerless Teams—those with no specified owners. Ownerless Teams can cause administrative issues and security hazards, making it critical to identify and manage them efficiently. This article offers a complete approach to finding and managing ownerless Microsoft Teams.

Understanding the Importance of Team Owners

Team owners in Microsoft Teams play a vital role in:

  • Managing team settings and permissions.
  • Adding and removing members.
  • Ensuring compliance with organizational policies.
  • set an ownerless group or team policy

    1. In the admin center, navigate to Show all > Settings > Organizational settings, then pick Microsoft 365 Groups from the Services tab.
    2. When there is no owner, send an email to active group members and ask them to become owners.
    3. If you want to leave the default configuration settings, select Save; otherwise, select Configure policy and follow the instructions below.
    4. On the Weekly notification settings page, you can decide who should receive ownership notifications. If you wish to accept or prohibit specific users, search for and add the security group you want to employ.
    5. On the Who is this email coming from? tab, choose a sender for the email and then click Next. Shared mailboxes are not supported. The sender must have either a user or a group mailbox.
    6. On the Subject and message page, personalize the email and optionally include a policy guideline URL, then click Next.
    7. On the Select which groups to target tab, click Specific groups to select the groups and teams you wish to include in this policy, or All groups.
    8. Select Next.
    9. On the Review and Finish screen, confirm your selections by clicking Finish, followed by Done.
Notifications are sent weekly starting within 24 hours of policy creation. Recipients can’t forward the notifications to others. Notifications and responses are tracked in the audit log.

    Finding Ownerless Teams

    Using Microsoft Teams Admin Center:
    1. Go to the Teams admin center.
    2. Under Teams, click ‘Manage teams’ to view all of the teams that have been formed in your business.
    3. If a team does not have an owner, a warning icon will appear next to the owner count in the team row.
    Using PowerShell

As we all know, the M365 group will be created at the time of team creation. Thus, we can get the teams without owners by simply running the following cmdlet.

But make sure to run the ‘Connect-ExchangeOnline’ cmdlet before running the below one.

    Windows Powershell
    Get-UnifiedGroup -Filter {ResourceProvisioningOptions -eq ‘Team’} | Where-Object {-Not $_.ManagedBy}

The above cmdlet lists all the Teams-enabled Microsoft 365 groups that have no owners assigned to them.

    Conclusion

Managing ownerless Microsoft Teams is crucial for ensuring a safe and orderly collaborative environment. Organizations can maintain effective administration and policy compliance by detecting ownerless teams on a regular basis and designating new owners. Using tools like the Teams Admin Center and PowerShell can help to streamline this process, while preventive actions can keep Teams from becoming ownerless in the first place. Following these rules will help you maintain a resilient and secure Microsoft Teams environment.
