Teams Screen Share Without Audio
Hello,
A user recently brought it to my attention that they were unable to share their screen in a Microsoft Teams 1:1 chat without Teams starting an audio call. Initially I thought they were doing something incorrectly, as I swear that previously you could share your screen in a chat without a call being started. I have not used the “Screen Sharing” button recently, but I remember that it only prompted you to include audio in the screen share, but it was optional.
However, after some quick testing it looks like the “Screen Sharing” button in Teams does always start a call. Does anyone know if it was always this way, maybe I am just misremembering how the feature used to work? If this was not always the case, is there still a way to share your screen in a Teams chat without initiating a call?
Hi Emily, thanks for reaching out.
Microsoft Teams, initiating screen sharing in a 1:1 chat typically starts an audio call by default. This behavior is intentional, as screen sharing often requires real-time communication between participants, which is facilitated through an audio call.
If you recall a different behavior where the screen sharing button in a 1:1 chat did not start an audio call and allowed you to share your screen without initiating a call, it’s possible that there might have been changes or updates to the Teams application since then. Microsoft frequently updates its products, and new features or changes might have been introduced to the screen sharing functionality.
Per my recent knowledge base research, there was no direct way to share your screen in a Teams chat without initiating an audio call. If you prefer to share your screen without audio or without initiating a call, you might consider using a Teams meeting or channel meeting instead. In a meeting, you have more control over the audio and screen sharing options, and you can choose to share your screen without necessarily initiating an audio call if that option suits your needs better.
